Some exciting news for the Lashings World XI today, as it was announced that the first match of their 2008 tour to Abu Dhabi will be held at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, otherwise known as the National Stadium in Abu Dhabi and home of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Club.
Described by Cricinfo as "arguably one of the world's finest cricket grounds", the state of the art stadium cost in the region of US $22 million to build and, as these pictures show, it will provide a wonderful backdrop to the first match of the Lashings World XI Cricket Festival.
The 17,000 seater venue was opened in May 2004 ,hosted its inaugural first class match (an Intercontinental Cup match between Scotland and Kenya) in November 2004 and went on to host its first One Day International in 2006.
Andy Elliott, spokesman for the Emirates Palace Hotel (where the Lashings World XI will be staying while in Abu Dhabi), said "It's a mightily impressive stadium - having one of the Lashings World XI matches there will help put the tour and the cricketing aspirations of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Club well and truly on the world cricketing radar."
The Lashings World XI tour to Abu Dhabi is taking place between 24-29th February 2008.
