Atapattu confirmed for Abu Dhabi

With the spring tour to Abu Dhabi getting closer, several aspects are starting to click into place, particularly the makeup of the team that is to form the Lashings World XI tour party. The latest signing has just made the team even stronger than it was already as Lashings World XI Chairman David Folb announced that Sri Lankan opening batsman Marvan Atapattu is joining the squad.

Atapattu has just completed a tour of Australia for Sri Lanka, playing in the Test series and announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of the series. He finished his career with 5502 Test runs, with 16 centuries and 17 half centuries, signing off with a defiant 80 in a losing cause against the Australians just one week ago in Hobart, Tasmania. He now goes on to captain the Delhi Jets in the new Indian Cricket League.

Marvan also spent the 2006 season with Lashings, scoring nearly 1100 runs at an average of just over 40 as well as chipping in with a few off breaks, taking 6 wickets at an average of 28.5.

This means the latest provisional lineup for the Lashings World XI tour to Abu Dhabi now looks as follows:

Richie Richardson (WI) (Capt)

Alvin Kallicharran (WI) (Manager)

Chris Adams (ENG)

Jimmy Adams (WI)

Marvan Atapattu (SL)

Greg Blewett (AUS)

Chris Cairns (NZ)

Mark Ealham (ENG)

Grant Flower (ZIM)

Chris Harris (NZ)

Graeme Hick (ENG)

Adam Hollioake (ENG)

Rashid Latif (PAK) (wk)

Azhar Mahmood (PAK)

Chris Silverwood (ENG)
