ACLT Relaunches

The ACLT, formerly known as the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust, relaunched today (28th April) at an event held at the Park Plaza Hotel in London. Lashings World XI are proud to support the ACLT and the Lashings World XI Auction division were present at the event.

The press release from the ACLT to mark their re-launch reads as follows:

THE ACLT UNVEIL NEW CELEBRITY PATRONS

Monday 28th April 2008 will see the ACLT host a high profile drinks reception to re-launch the charity and announce its plans for what is to be their biggest year to date. Leading celebrities from the world of entertainment, sports and politics are expected to attend to lend their continued support, including the Duchess of York,  Micah Richards, David Haye, the Sugababes, Craig David, John Barnes and Colin Salmon to name but a few.

The ACLT is a charity set up to encourage ethnic minorities and those from mixed race communities to register as bone marrow donors. There are worryingly less than 3% of potential ethnic minority donors on the UK bone marrow register, despite the prevalence of leukaemia amongst these groups.  The ACLT ‘s ultimate plan is to now set up an independent UK based bone marrow register, which will work alongside the existing world bone marrow registers.

John Barnes, ex-footballer and current TV pundit said: "I have been a Patron for the ACLT since 1999 and when I was initially introduced to the charity I was not aware of the problems faced by people diagnosed as needing bone marrow transplants in finding life saving matches or that matching is race specific. I immediately joined the register at an ACLT registration clinic and remain proud to be associated with the work that’s being done by continually raising awareness and the recruitment of new potential bone marrow donors.”

This event marks the coming of age for the charity, whose meteoric rise to prominence is matched only by its determination to help those requiring bone marrow transplants in their near impossible journey to find a suitable match. The ACLT will be unveiling the charity’s new look - complete with more high profile celebrity patrons dedicated to supporting the cause and spreading the word of the charity.

Orin Lewis, co-founder of the charity said: ‘Last year’s resounding success has seen the ACLT start to generate the awareness and recognition it deserves. The re-launch signifies the evolution of the charity to the next level, and with our new patrons ready to support us, we’re more than ready for the challenge.’
