THE CLOUDS parted, the sun broke through and some of cricket's brightest stars came out to shine as the Lashings roadshow rolled into Fenner's yesterday (Thursday, 12 June).
Fred Owen's Cambridge University were the opponents for the merry band of former greats, which included the West Indies' all-rounder Phil Simmons, Indian batsman Dinesh Mongia, Pakistan wicketkeeper Rashid Latif and England's Alan Mullally.
A healthy crowd was delighted to see the match get under way on time under blue skies after light drizzle had threatened to put a dampener on proceedings.
But the Lashings aces were soon into their stride as Brendan Taylor and Mongia played a series of expansive drives and lit the blue touch-paper.
And Mullally, who took 58 wickets in 19 tests for England and now lives and coaches in Perth, Australia, was enjoying being back in Cambridge.
He said: "I played here for Leicestershire many moons ago and the ground's changed a bit since then, and it was always good coming to play in Cambridge in pre-season."
And another man enjoying the day was Stuart Felstead, the managing director of a local office and window cleaning company, who won the chance to play in the Lashings team at an auction.
He said: "It's fantastic just to be in the same dressing room as some of these guys.
"They're household names and these are the days you live for."
Owen's charges triumphed by one wicket thanks to a Richard Timms half century and 45 not out from Tom Hemingway.
