Described in his Cricinfo profile as "a tall, angular left-hander and a patient accumulator" as well as being an underrated off-break bowler, Russel returns to Lashings for 2008 following a brief taste of life at the World's Greatest Cricket Club in the 2006 season between call-ups to the Sri Lankan national squad. He played 44 tests for Sri Lanka, starting his Test career as an opener but ultimately being used anywhere in the order to cover injury. Despite being in and out of the test side, he made three centuries (including 109 in a valiant rearguard action against England at Old Trafford in 2002) and ten test fifties. He was much more of a regular for Sri Lanka in ODI cricket, usually playing in the middle order where his ability to adapt his game to suit the situation at hand came to the fore. He played 180 ODIs in all (including the 2003 and 2007 World Cups), scoring nearly 4000 ODI runs at an average of 35 and chipping in with 40 ODI wickets. He retired from international cricket following the 2007 World Cup and initially moved into the commentary box, however he now combines his television commitments with the Indian Cricket League where he plays for the Chennai Superstars, helping them to victory in the very first ICL tournament in November 2007.
